Gillian Theobald: Gardenwork: 529 W 20th Street, 6W

Of her recent work, Theobald states, "My practice is to make both relief collages and paintings at the same time. The paintings are not an abstraction of an actual landscape, but the generation of one that did not previously exist. The painting slowly evolves in a process of interaction as I work on it. At the same time, I am also making relief collages out of found materials. These are totally abstract. Originally, they were started as a post graduate school exercise in exploring 2-D structure; 8 years ago they became more about a bas relief space. I first manipulate and glue together the found packaging; and then paint it. In both bodies of work, color is the principal driver, through a grounding in abstract expressionism. The quality of attention is one of slowing down and peering into the nature of an instant."
