Lisa Hoke: Relative Uncertainty: 529 W 20th St

NEW YORK, NY –– October 24th, 2024 –– Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is delighted to announce an upcoming exhibition of new works by Lisa Hoke, titled Relative Uncertainty. It will be Hoke’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and will take place at 529 W 20th St. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 24th, from 6-8PM.

Lisa Hoke’s oeuvre frames ordinary detritus as raw materials in a labor-intensive process of creation. She states, “Early in my art making life, I realized I could use what I know and how I live as source material.” (The Artful Mind, 2022) Working between expansive installations and diminutive collages, Hoke repurposes the ephemera of daily life.

Hoke’s practice of recycling–or, rather, reinvention–calls attention to the nature of the consumer experience, the material ramifications of which are often overlooked. Indeed, Hoke’s artistic practice is predicated on an endless supply of materials: That is, the abundant availability of consumer debris. In repurposing these materials, Hoke not only does her part in keeping detritus from landfills, but she also calls attention to the average consumer’s gargantuan impact. Relative Uncertainty will feature both large-scale installations and collages.

Lisa Hoke has exhibited across the United States, including at the McNay Museum in Texas, The Whitney Museum @Equitable Center, NY, and at Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson, New York. In 2018, Hoke was commissioned by Lavazza to create a permanent installation, Dolce Croma, in their Turin, Italy headquarters.
