"I start my work on raw canvas with watered-down acrylic paint. I stain the canvas with many thin layers of paint until I get the textures just right. Recently, I’ve had a shift in my work, and I’ve been using a lot more oil paint. I love it because there’s light in the color somehow.
Many of these are stained paintings, and then a lot of the bright, vibrant colors on top are oil paint. The light is different, and you can get all these different thick textures that look different to me than acrylic.
But I’ve also been treating my oil paints like I treat my acrylic paints – really watered down and using all these different brushes. I don’t use regular brushes – I like rollers of all different sizes that I cut and shape into what I want.
It’s been a different way for me to approach my paintings. It’s slower – with oil paint, things are slower. You have to slow down and think about things differently, which I feel has been good for my work." - Ky Anderson
