Josette Urso: Wildcard

Virtual Tour of Abstract Oil Paintings
July 15, 2024

Josette Urso makes abstract oil and watercolor paintings and drawings in an urgent attempt to capture the essence and energy of whatever surrounds her – be it a landscape, a subway, an apartment view, or a dinner table.

“I make exploratory paintings, working in response to my immediate environment. My approach involves moment-to-moment extrapolation governed by intuitive leaps of scale, color, and wayward geometry,” says Urso.

“As I paint, contrasts and cross-fertilizations unfold and are cumulative, non-linear, free-flowing, and interpretive. Space becomes an ambiguous and malleable substance; its manipulation and acrobatic mark-making become a kind of gymnasium of image collision.

My paintings are records of these explorations and the activity that goes into painting them. They are about being immersed in the act of looking and engaging."
