Cynthia Rojas discusses the inspiration for "Layered," 2024, one of the colorful, abstract paintings featured in her solo exhibiton, " Some Wheres I've Been."
Most of my work starts with color. I create colors and shapes, and then I begin to think about what it looks like.
With this painting specifically, I was seeing the Cube at Astor Place. I started to think about that cube and the sculpture of it. I love that space and walk by it all the time. Things started to resemble the Astor Cube in this work, and I started creating more squares to represent that.
The color scheme uses the bright colors that I like – yellows, greens, pinks, and blues. The line work takes into account the embroidery and craft that I love but can’t make, so I represent it in my work. Perhaps these paintings can turn into sculptures one day—we’ll see. - Cynthia Rojas
