Art Up Close: Greg Chann

The Role of Color in Developing Sculptures
April 4, 2025

"All the work in the exhibition is from 2024, and these larger works are from the earlier part of the year. I tend to build in somewhat of a series and then I question how I can develop them and change them. I might start with a thicker material perhaps, or a denser color.

My color sensibility hasn’t changed, but the application of the density has changed, and the combinations have changed. When I lay down color, I’ll pick a random color and, in this instance, I’ll start with a red and it will fade to orange. And then I’ll paint this blue and see how they work together, and if they don’t work together, I’ll sand it off and maybe add a purple.

The color density is very important to me. The red is more intense, so it stands out more and the yellow is softer, so it recedes. There’s a push pull of color in the work." - Greg Chann
