Sydney Licht is what I call a “juicy” painter because you can see how she enjoys and expresses the sensuality of paint in all of her still life paintings. Sydney collects boxes and uses them as subject matter for her still life paintings, elevating mundane objects of everyday life to the utmost intrigue. She demonstrates what I call “joie de paint,” which, to me, is this thrill of using and playing with color, paint, surface, and pattern. You can see how Sydney embraces “joie de paint” in her intimate still life paintings, and the thrill and the joy of experiencing that are what gets me in this painting.
