Steven Baris created these new paintings in the past year during the pandemic. Historically, Steven’s work has been about a sense of dislocation and space. He’s always created ambiguous spaces that you're not quite sure what they are, and he's taken it further this year with these new works, called Toppling.
Steven started making sculptures out of concrete blocks in his studio that were very much a physical representation of what was going on in the world. You take something solid, like concrete blocks, and it becomes very precarious and unstable. He creates these sculptures not for sale but for vision. The blocks are a template for creating diagrams of the paintings, representing the same instability and tenuousness we've all been feeling for the past year.
